Description: Acne is a common condition that is associated with considerable morbidity, particularly psychiatric and psychological (hereafter psychiatric). Many treatments are available; however, isotretinoin is unique in that it is highly efficacious and can result in a durable improvement in acne. Isotretinoin can be associated with a variety of side effects, including mucocutaneous dryness, photosensitivity, and musculoskeletal symptoms, among others. In particular, there have been concerns and controversy regarding whether isotretinoin is associated with psychiatric morbidity, including suicidality. In this issue of JAMA Dermatology, Tan et al report further evidence relevant to this contentious area of study.
